Conversion of sanitary facilities and renovation of classrooms. In December 2020, we returned. Patrick was overwhelmed with joy to see us. No more traces of restraint. In a small meeting, it quickly became apparent which projects were pending:
The sanitary facilities at the Savior Children’s Home were desolate. Most of the toilets and showers were damaged, and the drain was open, which was critical in terms of hygiene and safety. There were three halfway-functioning toilets, which over 500 children used during school hours.
We went shopping for materials at various markets. A very adventurous undertaking requiring a little negotiation skill, which we had more than enough with Patrick and Joy.
The sanitary facility was then completely renovated by local workers. 3 became a total of 8 toilets and three showers.
Patrick was concerned about the condition of the classrooms; there was not enough space to teach all the children, which is why classes had to be combined, and not everyone had a school desk to study but had to sit on the floor. Another problem was the roof. It no longer provided adequate protection from rain and sun, so the lessons had to be interrupted from time to time.
Therefore, 2 classrooms were completely renovated, and 55 new school desks were bought. Furthermore, a medical room was created, with a bed in case a child falls ill or needs care.
